The married couple Émile and Marguerite stopped speaking to each other four years ago. The “birthday” of their silence coincides with the death of Émile’s beloved cat. Suspecting that Marguerite may have poisoned it, Émile has a nervous break-down; he jumps on her parrot and cruelly plucks out the colourful feathers. Even the parrot dies and, once stuffed and embalmed, ends up being the souvenir of their conjugal hatred. The broken-up but still living together couple lead a very independent life, but with the paranoid fear of being poisoned from one another, to the point that they decide to lock-up their cupboards.
